Spring gives us the opportunity to freshen everything up at the start of a new year – it’s the perfect time to revitalise ourselves and our homes.

And considering that the bathroom is one of the most visited rooms in any home, it is also the ideal place to start a big spring clean. But, to many people, bathrooms can be daunting and difficult to clean, especially when it comes to a deep spring clean. So, we’re here to give you some advice on how best to tackle the annual rejuvenation of your bathroom, complete with a handy checklist to assist you along the way.

Following these steps will make sure you can curb the chaos and find yourself with a clean, tidy, and hygienic bathroom, ready for the months ahead.

Clear the space

It can be difficult to find a good starting point when spring cleaning your bathroom, but we think it’s best to begin by de-cluttering it.

Gather everything in your bathroom that you can remove, such as toiletries, accessories, and towels. Place them all in one area, such as on the kitchen table. Then, organise everything into three piles: donate, dispose, and keep.

This will allow you to clean the bathroom thoroughly and only bring back the items that you intend on keeping.

Get your cleaning supplies ready

Before you start cleaning, you’ll need to gather up your supplies. When the clutter has been tamed, you’re ready to start cleaning every surface; so, you need to have the materials to do so.

Be conscious that many bathrooms can be enclosed spaces, so use products that you feel comfortable with. Avoid anything with a strong smell that could potentially put pressure on your lungs.

Everyone has their own preferred products and tools, but if you find yourself stuck when it comes to cleaning your bathroom wall panels, try out some of these natural cleaner recipes. These supplies can also be used to clean your kitchen, including any kitchen wall panels or splashback for kitchens, too.

Clean everything you can see

Be sure to turn on your bathroom fan and open any windows to allow for good ventilation around your bathroom, and then get to work! You should start from the top and work your way down – clean the walls, then the shower or bath and so on.

Most people tend to leave their toilet until last, and for good reason. The toilet will harbour the most germs in your bathroom and should be the last thing you clean to avoid cross contamination. Pay close attention to this, especially if you are using the same cloths or scrubbers as you need for the bath and sink.

Clean the floor and let all your surfaces dry thoroughly. The hard part is now over!

Organise and decorate your space

Now that your bathroom has been fully spring cleaned, you can start to bring back the items you want to keep and reorganise them to optimise the space.

The easiest places to organise will be places like a medicine cabinet or the sink top, so start with these items first to give you a sense of how much room you have to play with. If you have any smaller items that are difficult to keep track of, consider placing them in storage containers or even zip-lock bags.

When you are finished, take a moment to work out how the space makes you feel. If you feel like it is complete, then great! But, you might want to add some finishing touches.

Consider adding some decorative pieces, like candles, wall hangings or tissue boxes. Then, make a list so that you can begin to pick these things up to add to your freshly spring-cleaned bathroom.

Bathroom spring cleaning checklist

  1. Remove everything from your bathroom to organise. Then, take any towels, bathmats, shower curtains and window curtains and wash them thoroughly. Hang them to dry, preferably outside for that fully fresh feeling.
  2. Dust surfaces first, including any wall hangings or fixtures and all corners.
  3. Sweep or vacuum the floor, remembering to remove any dust from heating or exhaust vents.
  4. Get to work on your bathroom walls, and be sure to clean all of them properly
  5. Scrub the shower, bathtub and sink thoroughly
  6. Clean the toilet
  7. Clean any bathroom bins, both inside and out
  8. Polish the mirrors, shower door and any other glass features in the room. Additionally, you can use glass cleaner on any metal accents to brighten them up and give your bathroom some extra shine.
  9. Wipe down any cabinets or under sink surfaces.
  10. Mop the floor, bring any items back in, and relax! Enjoy your fresh, sparkling clean bathroom.

Don’t forget to maintain it

Unfortunately, a good spring clean will only get you so far. It’s easy to maintain a clean bathroom, however, and a few small steps performed daily will help you keep it spick and span.

Keep some cleaning products in your bathroom for easy access, and wipe down surfaces when you have a few moments every day. Try to keep everything in its designated place to avoid clutter.

Now that you know which items you need and which you don’t, be sure to avoid building up a collection of unnecessary objects that will gather dust and take up valuable space.
