Whether you’ve just moved into a new house and found that you’re blessed with a few en-suites, you’re installing a bathroom fitted with bathroom wall panels specifically for your child, or you just want to redecorate, there are lots of ways to personalise bathroom décor to make it fun and accessible for your little ones.

Interior design for kids is always fun – it demands bright colours, novelty items and as much whimsy as you can muster. They’re also a really good way of providing the adults in the house with their own spaces to relax in (this can be somewhat difficult to do when surrounded by rubber ducks).

We’ve compiled a few different things you can include in a kids’ bathroom to inspire you, along with a few of our favourite themes.

Kids bathroom ideas should combine functionality with fun. Childrens bathroom ideas can be playful in design but should also be easy to manage for whatever age. It should be a safe space, easy to use, and should be able to grow with your child.

Petite bathroom suites

If you’re starting from scratch and are renovating completely, you might want to consider installing a suite that is small enough for younger children. Think low sinks, little baths and dinky toilets that are the perfect size for smaller kids for your childrens bathroom ideas.

These are definitely practical for the time and will make it easier for your kids to use it. However, if you want to install a bathroom that will serve its purpose for a long time, then install a regular bathroom but make it child friendly. You can do this in a really straightforward way, such as by having a stool so they can reach the sink or toilet. This is also a simple step to take if you’re trying to modify a pre-existing bathroom for your child.

Additionally, even if you choose to install a full-sized bathroom, you could still attach adhesive hooks low down on the walls. These are easily interchangeable and will make things like towels more accessible for your child.

If the bathroom is intended for more than one child, then you might want to consider installing a double sink to make it easier for them to share. You won’t need two showers or toilets – this won’t be necessary for obvious reasons. But, a double sink will make your children’s lives, and your own, considerably easier, which is why it is one of our favourite childrens bathroom ideas.

As for the floors and ceilings, children are a lot messier than adults. They like to have fun in the bath, and they will splash a lot more than a grown-up. Because of this, it’s best to avoid paint or wallpaper near the bath or shower. It’s best to have shower wall panels to prevent any damage. These are also a lot easier to clean than tiles and harbour less bacteria.

Safety first

A child having their own bathroom doesn’t mean they should be unsupervised – especially if they are particularly young, regardless of the painstaking efforts you will go to when creating your kids bathroom themes. However, to ensure that the risk of an accident is minimal, there are some precautions you can take.

Anti-scald devices can be easily found, and you can install these on your taps and showers to prevent the temperature from ever becoming too high. In the instance a child uses the bathroom alone, an anti-scald device should prevent them from burning themselves whilst washing their hands.

If the child has their own shower or bath, you should add some adhesive grips to the base to make sure they won’t slip. These are widely available and usually come in a variety of child-friendly shapes, and you can tie these in with your theme. To the same effect, you should look into finding non-slip flooring.

Storage solutions

As previously mentioned, having a kids’ bathroom means your children can confine their accessories and products to their own space. This can make things a lot more functional and orderly for busy families. The biggest perk is not having to worry about sharing a single bathroom in the morning time, especially in a house with a few children.

Alongside this, there is the added benefit of allowing children to learn to keep their own spaces organised and tidy. Kids can have a lot of bath-time toys, so they will need somewhere to store them. Open, low shelving is a really great storage option for kids bathroom themes, as they can see where things have been taken from and know where to put them back. This is also helpful to prevent their favourite items from getting lost.

Accessories

Children change their mind quicker than anyone could keep up with, so it can be best to start with a base colour and add their chosen kids bathroom themes with accessories. These white shimmer wall panels could be a great starting point: they’re simple and white, but still quirky enough to be perfect for children.

You can find themed bathmats, shower curtains, toothbrush holders and towels, and these can be as interchangeable as your little one’s preferences.

Nautical theme

A nautical theme is a classic one for a child’s bathroom. It’s really simple and, in fact, works effectively in all bathrooms, not just for childrens bathroom ideas. However, you can make a nautical theme for a child a lot more novelty than you would for an adult.

You can start with simple walls, such as these grey brick effect panels. This will create a rustic effect that will compliment the rest of the accessories. Add nautical items like striped bathmats, porthole mirrors, and towels monogrammed with anchors. You could even find a lighthouse-shaped toilet brush to go that extra mile.

This is a really great theme that is sure to bring a bit of fun to a bathroom, whilst also having a neutral base that could be changed over time.

Under the sea

This is a more fanciful version of a nautical bathroom – instead of sailing the seas, you dive underneath them! You could have sea creatures stencilled on the walls, whale bathmats and seashell soap dishes. You could also have mermaid accessories, such as scale patterned toothbrush holders and even a mermaid-shaped toilet handle, to create whimsical bathroom themes for kids.

This theme can be super colourful and will encourage both you and your child to use your imagination. Think outside the box – less is definitely not more when it comes to this theme. Don’t forget a wave-printed shower curtain!

Chic pink

If the kids’ bathroom is an en-suite, perhaps you will want to decorate it in the same theme as their bedroom. Pink works just as well for a bathroom as grey or white does, so you could take this theme beyond the bedroom.

Again, you could simply accessorise with bathmats and shower curtains, or you could go for an almost entirely pink room. If you want something a bit more grown-up, marble works really well with pink, especially these marble wall panels. This will create a more sophisticated look whilst still being child friendly and practical.

There are also lots of coloured vanities out there with great storage options beneath. These could maybe be repainted as time went on, allowing you to upcycle items you already have should you choose to redecorate.

This doesn’t only extend to pink. You could take any other colour, like yellow, blue or even orange, and create the same effects. Just make sure it’s your child’s favourite, and it’s sure to be a hit.

Young adult

If you have a slightly older child, or even if you have a teenager you don’t know how to decorate for, you could simply replicate what style you have gone for in your bathroom. You could do this and add some kitschy details to make it more youthful.

It’s understandable to want the bathroom to be able to grow with your child and not have to redecorate multiple times as they grow up. We love monochrome bathrooms for this; black and white is a classic combination and provides a good base on which you can add more colour if you want to.

You can find a lot of monochrome bathroom suites, as well as little details like prints and patterned accessories. This also works well as a neutral theme for any shared bathrooms. A subway tile panel will look great alongside some matte black accents. This will look sophisticated as time goes on but can easily be enlivened for younger kids.
